bk2 ch7.2 Flashcards
What is the equation for photosyinthesis
light energy
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
chlotophyll (C6H12O6 = glucose)
What are the two stages of photosynthesis?
Stage one is called the light reaction, stage two is the dark reaction.
What happens in the first stage of photosynthesis?
In this stage, light energy is trapped and changed into chemical energy. At the same time enzymes split water into oxygen and hydrogen. Enzymes are protein molecules which act as catalysts. A catalyst is something that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up in the reaction. Enzymes helps reactions occur faster.
What happens in the second stage of phtosynthesis?
Stage two is the dark reaction, a series of enzyme-controlled reactions in which carbon dioxide and
hydrogen from water combine to form glucose.
Light energy is not needed in this stage.
The key to the process is c_____, which are
found within the cells of plants.
chloroplasts
What do chloroplasts do?
Chloroplasts contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which acts something like a solar cell, trapping light energy and converting it to another form. Chloroplasts act as ‘factories’ for the production of glucose.
The process by which organisms release energy from food is called r_____.
respiration
What is the formula for aerobic respiration (the most common form of respiration)?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
