Rabies precautions

A

From dogs, cats, ferrets, skunks, raccoons, bats

Ppx:

  • animal displays signs: 1 dose of rabies IG and 4 doses of rabies vaccine over 14 days if pt has not been vaccinated
  • if previously vaccinated, they don’t need Ig; only 2 doses of vaccine

Tetanus precautions

A

10 years ago for a minor wound OR > 5 years for a major wound: administer tetanus toxoid
Tetanus IG is only needed if wound is major/dirty and patient has had 3 or less lifetime toxoids
