DSM
Mania: elevated, expansive or irritable mood most of the day almost every day for 1+ wk and at least 3 of the following
Hypomania: elevated, expansive or irritable mood most of the day almost every day for 4 consecutive days and at least 3 of the following:
- Grandiosity/inflated self-esteem
- Decreased need for sleep
- Increased talkativeness
- Racing thoughts
- Easily distracted
- Psychomotor agitation/increased goal- directed activity
- Activities that can have painful consequences (e.g. buying spree)
+ a major depressive episode
necessary sx of a manic episode
elevated/expansive mood
irritable mood
Also 3 or more of these for manic episode
- Grandiosity/inflated self-esteem
- Decreased need for sleep
- Increased talkativeness
- Racing thoughts
- Easily distracted/flight of ideas/racing thoughts
- Psychomotor agitation/increased goal- directed activity
- Risk Taking/Activities that can have painful consequences (e.g. buying spree)
Mixed episode
meets criteria for both a manic and a major depressive episode
major depressive episode
depressed mood or loss of interest along with 4 other sx from DSM bipolar list
Bipolar 1
Manic or Mixed episode of mania and depression often followed by a depressive episode
can exist with or without psychotic episodes
may require hospital
rapid cycling
rapid cycling
rapid switch mania to depression and back
mania 4+ times per year
Bipolar II
depressive and hypomanic episodes alternate
1+ (2?) major depressive episode and 1+ Hypomanic episode
Usually less severe and do not inhibit function
not severe enough to cause major impairment or require hospital and no psychosis
Cyclothymic disorder
cyclic disorder
brief hypomania and dysthymia
no full manic or major depressive episodes
chronic
