What does bipolar consist of
Two or more repeated episodes of hypomania and mania.
What do people with BP experience?
Moods that fluctuate between extreme feelings of greatness (mania) and then moods that are miserable (hypomania)
Hypomania (depression) symptoms
Low or depressed mood
Hopelessness
Lack of energy
Guilt
Inability to concentrate
Loss of interest
Suicidal ideation
Eating disorders
Sleep disturbances

What is Lithium
Lithium is a mood stabilising medication that treats mania (and hypomania but less effectively). It needs 2 weeks to be at full efficacy.
Bipolar type 1 classification
-One or more manic episodes or mixed manic
-Minor or major depressive episodes often present
-May have psychotic symptoms
Bipolar type 2 classification
-One or more major depressive episode
-One or more hypomanic episode
-No full manic or mixed manic episode
Manic episode definition (not symptoms)
A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated or irritable mood lasting AT LEAST 1 week
Bipolar 1 prognosis
-more severe, experience more cycling, more substance abuse, tend to recover to functioning state between episodes
Bipolar 2 prognosis
More chronic, more episodes, more depressive episodes, less intense + recognised.

When an adult patient has had numerous subsyndromal hypomanic episodes and numerous depressive episodes over 2 years. But dont meet criteria for mania or depression - usually progresses to bipolar

Patient has had four or more mood episodes within one year. Associated with poor treatment response
