Basic Input/Output Services
Contains POST and System Startup Utility (CMOS)
Firmware
Code that is burned onto a chip as opposed to software
POST
Power On Self Test
First thing that is executed by CPU on startup.
Broadcasts a “check if you have any issues” to hardware connected to the motherboard.
POST Beep Codes
A speaker on the motherboard that will have different beeps to “display” where the errors are.
“No RAM” beep code will continue until system is powered off
POST Cards
External system hardware, or sometimes built into a motherboard, that will display a 2 digit hexadecimal error code.
System Setup
Hold down a specific key to get to the System Setup menu before the OS boots
System Setup Settings
Boots Options, Firmware updates, Security settings, interface configuration, CPU overclocking features, Security (Passwords for before windows even starts)
UEFI
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface
Replaced traditional 16-bit BIOS in modern Systems
CMOS Battery
Used to supply the motherboard with the small power it needs, when the computer is offline, to keep extremely important things running. Like the RTC (real time clock)
A bad battery can wreck havoc on today’s systems
Flashing
Flashing the ROM (read-only memory) updates the firmware on flash chip that’s on your motherboard
Before doing this make sure you have Good Power and a Complete copy of the BIOS flash update file
