Biopsychology - The Fight or Flight Response Flashcards
1
Q
Which systems play a major role in the Fight or Flight response?
A
- Autonomic Nervous System
- Endocrine System
2
Q
What starts off the Fight or Flight response? (1)
A
A stressor is identified by the Hypothalamus
3
Q
What happens after the stressor is identified? (1)
A
- Pituitary gland is activated, which triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the ANS
4
Q
Which hormone is released into the bloodstream? (2)
A
Adrenaline
5
Q
What releases Adrenaline? (2)
A
The Adrenal Medulla
6
Q
What does the Fight or Flight response do? (3)
A
- Prepares the body for sudden physical action
- Produces physiological reactions (e.g increased heart rate + respiration, reduced saliva production and digestion)
7
Q
What reactions are the physiological reactions classed as? (3)
A
- Immediate
- Automatic
8
Q
What does the parasympathetic branch do? (4)
A
Returns the body back to normal once the stressor has been removed (Homeostasis)
9
Q
What are examples of Homeostasis? (4)
A
- Decreased Heart rate
- Respiration decreased
- Digestion increased
