Biopsychology - Structure and Functions of Neurons Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function of a Dendrite?
A
- Where the neurotransmitter receptors are found
- Once the receptor and neurotransmitter bind, it causes an electrical impulse
2
Q
What is the function of the Cell Body?
A
- Includes the nucleus where the genetic material of the cell can be found
3
Q
What is the function of the Myelin Sheath?
A
- Protects the axon and helps speed up transmission of the message
4
Q
What is the function of Nodes of Ranvier?
A
- Speeds up the transmission of the impulse by forcing it to ‘jump’ across the gaps along the axon
5
Q
What is the function of the Axon?
A
- Sends a nerve impulse through the neuron to transmit a message to the next neuron
6
Q
What is the function of the Terminal Button?
A
- The end of the neuron and they send the information through to the next neuron, through the release of neurotransmitters
