What does the Endocrine System do?
Provides a chemical system of communication within the blood stream to regulate the activity of cells and organs in the body
What are the chemical messengers in the Endocrine System called?
Hormones
What do hormones do?
- Released by our glands
- Regulate many bodily functions
Where can the Pineal Gland be found?
The brain
What does the Pineal Gland secrete?
Melatonin
What does Melatonin do?
- Regulates the sleep-wake cycle
- Makes the person feel tired, therefore ready to sleep
Where can the Adrenal Gland be found?
Just above the kidneys
What does the Adrenal Gland release?

What does Adrenaline do?
- Fight or flight response (e.g increased blood flow to transport oxygen to the brain for rapid response planning.
Where can the Pituitary Gland be found?
The brain
What does the Pituitary Gland release?
Many different hormones
What is one example of what the Anterior Pituitary Gland releases? (Female + Male)
- Releases LH + FSH
What does the hormones LH + FSH do? (Female)
- Encourages the ovaries to release estrogen and progesterone
- Regulates the menstrual cycle
- Prepares the body for reproduction
What does the hormones LH + FSH do? (Male)
