Biopsychology: Nervous System is on paper 1 deck Flashcards
What is the nervous system divided into?
The Central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
What is the central nervous system?
Consists of the brain and spinal cord. This is where all complex processing of information is done and decisions are made.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Brings information from senses to the CNS and transmit information from the CNS to the muscles and glands.
What is the spinal cord?
Is an extension of the brain. It transports messages to and from the brain to the peripheral nervous system. It is also responsible for reflexes.
What is the brain?
The centre of awareness. It is divided in two hemispheres.
What does the peripheral nervous system do?
Relays information via nerve impulses (an electrical signal) from the rest of the body back to the CNS.
What is the peripheral nervous system divided into?
Divided into two parts the somatic nervous system and the autonomic.
What is the somatic nervous system?
Is responsible for passing messages to the brain from the sensory organs, and from the brain to the muscles. It controls voluntary or conscious actions.
What is autonomic nervous system?
Controls the body’s ‘autonomic’ or involuntary actions such as breathing and heart rate.
What does ANS control?
Controls smooth muscles and glands, generally forms the supporting tissue of blood vessels and hollow internal organs , such as stomach and intestine.
What is autonomic nervous system divided into?
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous system.
