Approaches: Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Key terms to remember?
Models Meditational processes (Attention, retention, reproduction, motivation) Bandura's bobo doll Strengths and negatives
What are assumptions of SLT?
- Learning occurs through observation and imitation of role models.
- Agrees with behaviourists that much behaviour is learnt through experience.
How does SLT say we learn? (AO1)
Learning through observation and imitation of others behaviour.
What are the two types of models in SLT? (AO1)
Live models and symbolic models.
What are live models? (AO1)
These are people who are present in our environment (teachers/parents, etc.)
What are symbolic models?
These are people who are present in the media (e.g. celebrities.)
What makes an effective role model?
- Same gender + age
- Higher status
- Admired/respected.
What is vicarious reinforcement?
Where imitation is more likely to occur if the model is positively reinforced.
What is identification?
Where the role models you have need to have something that you identify with.
What was Bandura’s Bobo doll experiment?
He recorded the behaviour of young children who watched an adults behave aggressively toward the doll.
What was the experiment like?
A lab experiment used, the independent variable was manipulated in three conditions: Aggressive model, non-aggressive model and no model shown.
What were the results of Bandura doll study?
Aggressive model (group 1) were more aggressive than the others.
What was conclusion of Bandura doll study?
Supports SLT as it shows children imitate behaviour of role model even if the behaviour is aggressive.
What is meditational processes?
Observational learning uses cognitive processes such as memory. These processes occur between stimulus and response.
What are the 4 stages of meditational process?
Attention, Retention, Reproduction, Motivation.
