Biopsychology: Localisation Of Functions Of The Brain Flashcards
Key Terms to remember?
4 lobes 4 cortex's (location and function) Phineas Gage Karl Lashley Broca's area (Tan + Dronkers) Wernicke's area
How many lobes are there?
4
How many hemispheres are there
2
What are the differences and similarities between the two hemispheres?
Both mirrored, except left hemisphere has brochas area and wernickes area.
What are the 4 lobes
Frontal lobe.
Parietal lobe.
Occipital lobe.
Temporal lobe.
What are the 4 cortex’s in the lobes?
Motor cortex.
Somatosensory cortex.
Visual cortex.
Auditory cortex.
What is the primary function and location of motor cortex?
- Generation of voluntary motor movements.
- Located in frontal lobes in both hemispheres.
What is the function and location of somatosensory cortex?
- Detects sensory events from the body.
- Located in partial lobe.
What is the function and location of visual centres?
- Processes different types of visual info such as colour, shape and movement.
- Located in occipital lobe.
What is the function and location of auditory centres?
- Sound has already been largely decoded by now, in auditory centres it is recognised and may result in response.
- Located in temporal lobe.
Who is the first case of localisation of function?
Phineas Gage - Iron rod through his head.
What occurred after Phineas gages accident?
His personality changed. More disrespectful etc. Friends said he was “no longer Gage”.
What study goes against localisation of functions?
Karl Lashley 1950.
What did Karl Lashley believe?
Higher cognitive functions such as processes involved in learning, are not localised but distributed in a more holistic way.
What experiment did Lashley do?
Removed parts of rats cortex and they kept at least partial memory of the maze.
