Biopsych: Structure and functions of neurons Flashcards
Neurons essay intro
The cells that make up the nervous system are called neurons.
They communicate with each other using a mixture of electrical and chemical signals.
Name the 6 components of a neuron
Terminal button (pre-synaptic membrane)
Axon
Nodes of Ranvier (the gap)
Myelin sheath
Cell body
Dendrites (post-synaptic membrane)
What is the first component
Dendrites (Post synaptic membrane)
What is the last component
Terminal button (presynaptic membrane)
What is another name for the terminal button
Pre- synaptic membrane
What is another name for the dendrites
Post synaptic membrane
Where are neurotransmitters found
In vesicles in the pre-synaptic membrane
Where are receptor sites found
In the post synaptic membrane
Describe the terminal button
The end of the neuron, and they send the information through to the next neurone, through the release of neurotransmitters (stored in vesicles)
Describe the axon
Sends a nerve impulse (action potential) through the neuron to transmit a message to the next neuron.
Whats another name for nerve impulse
Action potential
Describe the Nodes of Ranvier
Speeds up the transmission of the impulse by forcing it to ‘jump’ across the gaps along the axon
Describe the Myelin sheath
Protects the axon and helps to speed up transmission of the message
Describe the cell body
Includes the nucleus which contains the genetic material of the cell
Do a light sketch of a neuron, including all components
