Q

Wundt AO1

A

Wundt is known as the father of psychology

He set up the first psychology laboratory in Germany (1879) and published one of the first books on psychology

This helped to establish psychology as a n independent branch of psychology

He used controlled environments to conduct studies on mental processes

He used scientific method to study the structure of sensation and perception using introspection,

Arguing that human experiences should be analysed in terms of its components. Such as sensations, emotions and reactions.

His work and ideas were then later developed by cognitive psychologists who study our though/mental processes.

Q

Wundt positive AO3 (to get blue must write full para)

A

Prasied for moving psychology away from philosophy

Used controlled environments with a standardised procedure to study thoughts feelings and sensations.

E.G using same stimulus= metronome

And giving ppts same standardised instructions.

Increased replicability of the research and increased psychologies status as a science.

Q

Wundt negative AO3 ((to get blue must write full para)

A

While it was replicable- not reliable.

Introspection focuses on a ppts subjective experience.

Leads to great variation in results.

Hard to establish general priciples of human behaviour

Behavioural psychologists such as Watson believed only behaviour that is observable and measurable scietntfilly should be studied.

Behaviouralist approach born, which used empirical and objective techniques.

Such as controlled lab environments

Raising psychologies scientific status.

Describe introspection

A

Introspection focuses on present experiences

An individuals copious experience is systamatically analysed.

The individual would focus on an object, whilst listening to a stimulus- such as a metronome, and look inwards noticing sensations, feelings and images.

Analysis is broken up into components of thoughts, images and sensation.
