Biomes Flashcards
Climate
Overall weather in an area over a long period of time
Biome
A group of ecosystems that have formed in response to a shared regional climate
Terrestrial
Relating to land
Aquatic
Relating to water
Food Security
People’s ability to access sufficient, safe, nutricious food to maintain. Healthy and active life
Overfishing
Capturing fish faster than they can reproduce
Deforestation
Destruction of forests
Supply Chain
A system involved in supplying a product of service to a consumer.
Projected world population in 2050
9.8 billion
Aquatic Biome
Marine: Takes the majority of the Earth.
Freshwater: Takes up a small amount of ocean mostly around the arctic circle and Antarctica
Grassland biome
Moderate rainfall, fields of grass and few trees.
Scattered around South Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.
Forest Biome
Terrestrial, high biodiversity, plentiful tree coverage, dense, moderate temperatures, absorbs lots of carbon.
Rainforest are commonly found between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
Temperate forests are located between the Tropic of Cancer and the arctic circle.
Desert Biome
Terrestrial, extreme temperatures, low biodiversity, often sandy, bare, not very dense, minimal tree coverage.
All different types of deserts range between the arctic circle and Antarctica. This is because of the large range of deserts, polar, coastal, semi-arid and sun-tropical.
Tundra Biome
Very low temperature, very bare, little tree coverage, little biodiversity, famous for snowy owl.
Found above the Tropic of Cancer and below the Antarctic Circle.
Covid 19 effect on food security
Due to workers decreasing and many having to isolate supply chain issues have problems negatively impacted food security.
