Biomes Flashcards
Define Biomes
A collection of ecosystems that have similar characteristics (vegetation, climate, animals adapted to living in that area) and are found in particular geographical regions in the world.
5 characteristics of biomes
- climate of region
- geographical location
- consists of different ecosystems
- special adaptions of vegetations in biomes
- Physical and behavioural adaptions to environment of animals
Grassland :vegetation, climate and soil type?
vegetation: Mainly grasses ( sweet and sour), very few trees
Climate: Hot summers with rain (thunderstorms) and cold winters with occasional frost
Soil type:sandy soil, no nutrients
Nama Karoo :vegetation, animals, climate and soil type?
vegetation: grasses and small shrubs
Climate: very hot summers with rain fall and cold winters
Soil type: rich in lime, thin soil layer over rock
animals: sheep+ goat farms
Succulent Karoo :vegetation, animals, climate and soil type?
vegetation: dwarf succulent shrubs with thick, fleshy leaves that store water.
-most succulents in world
-covered in flowers in spring
Climate: hot dry summers and low winter rain fall
Soil type: rich in lime, thin soil layer over rock
animals: nocturnal
Thicket :vegetation, climate and soil type?
vegetation: shrubland to low forest (evergreens + shrubs)
Climate: Varies ( extends over large area)
Soil type: shallow, varies from sandy loam to sandy clay soil, rich in lime
Forests :vegetation, climate and soil type?
vegetation: evergreen trees
Climate: high rainfall throughout the year
Soil type: fertile soil with thick humus layer
Savannah :vegetation, animals, climate and soil type?
vegetation: grassland and trees
Climate: warm wet summers and cold dry winters
Soil type: sandy, low nutrient soil
animals: Big 5
which is biggest, second biggest and smallest biome in SA?
Savannah: Largest
Nama Karoo: second
Forest: Smallest
