Biology Topic 2 Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
Exothermic chemical reaction which is continuously occurring in living cells
What is the energy from respiration used for?
All living processes, movement, warmth and building larger molecules
What are the different ways respiration can occur?
Aerobically and anaerobically (without oxygen)
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen ——> Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
What is the balanced symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
6 O2 + C6H12O6 —–> 6 H2O + 6 CO2
Word equation for anaerbic respiration?
Glucose —> Lactic acid
Why is less energy released in anaerobic?
Glucose is not fully oxidised so less energy is released
What happens during exercise?
Heart rate, Breathing rate and breath volume increase to supply muscles with more oxygenated blood. Enables increased respiration, more energy is transferred to meet demands of the muscle cells
Negative effects of anaerobic respiration?
Incomplete oxidisation of glucose causes a build up of lactic acid and creates an oxygen debt. Muscles become fatigues and stop contacting efficiently
Compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic releases more energy than anaerobic, Aerobic requires oxygen whereas anaerobic doesn’t, Anaerobic releases lactic acid whereas aerobic doesn’t
