Biology Topic 1- Organisation, Cells and Microsocopy Flashcards
What are cells?
The basic building blocks of all living organisms
What is a tissue?
a group of cells with a similar structure and function
What type of cells are plant and animal? + features
eukaryotic - they have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material (DNA) enclosed in a nucleus
Function of nucleus
controls activities of the cell and contains the genetic material
Function of cytoplasm
Where most chemical reactions take place
Function of Cell membrane
Controls the passage of substances into and out of the cell. It also contains receptor molecules.
Function of mitochondria
where aerobic respiration takes place
Function of Ribosomes
Where protein synthesis occurs
Function of Chloroplasts
absorb light to make food via photosynthesis
Function of cell wall
Strengthens the cell (made of cellulose)
Function of vacuole
Filled with cell sap
What do Plant cells have that animal cells don’t
Chloroplast, permanent vacuole, cell wall
Specialised features of sperm cells
Tail to swim, lots of mitochondria for energy, digestive enzymes in the acrosome to break through egg
Specialised features of Nerve cells
Very long to carry electrical impulses,
Specialised features of muscle cells
Lot’s of mitochondria for contraction, muscle fibres that slide over each other
