biology test 2 - nervous system Flashcards
Central nervous system
- Consists of the brain and spinal cord.
- Contains interneurons that receive information about the environment from the peripheral nervous system and send signals to the peripheral nervous system to enable a response.
- Important for determining how we function if safeguarded by the bones.
- Skull protects the brain, the spine protects the spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid removes waste and transports chemicals produced in the brain.
Peripheral nervous system
Afferent nerves; transport signals from the sensory cells to the central nervous system.
Efferent nerves: Transport signals from the central nervous system to the muscles to perform certain actions.
Sensory receptors
We have sensory receptors in our nose eyes and skin. They are sensitive to particular kinds of info and direct it to particular parts of our brain where it can be processed accordingly.
Nerve tissue
made up of a cluster of specialized nerve cells called neurons. Communicate through electrical signals called nerve impulses.
Neurons
Allow a one-way flow of information from the end of the neuron to the other. Chemical signals enter through dendrites, and initiate a chemical reaction through the axon towards the axon terminal; the myelin sheath is insulated and directs the signal throughout the cell quickly.
