biology test 2 - musculoskeletal system Flashcards
Endoskeleton
Skeleton is inside the body
Exoskeleton
Skeleton is outside the body
Skeletal system
supports body, delicate organs, and enables movement.
Bones
Are hard and dense. Consist of a mixture of materials primarily calcium and phosphorous as well as collagen fibers. Canals inside the bones contain nerves and blood vessels.
Ligaments
Elastic connective tissue that holds bones together at each joint. Made up of collagen fibers.
Cartilage
Dense connective tissue consists of cells in a matrix of collagen fibers. Provides a strong, flexible, low-friction support for bones and other tissues so movement is pain-free.
Types of muscle
Skeletal muscle: Allows for voluntary movement in the limbs. Muscle is attached to the bone by tendons.
Smooth muscle: For involuntary movement of essential organs such as the digestive system.
Cardiac muscle: for involuntary movement of the heart.
Muscle
Muscle tissue consists of bundles of long cells called muscle fibers that contain specialized proteins that cause muscles to contract when signaled by nerve cells. When proteins contract, muscles get shorter and thicker.
Slow-twitch muscle fibers
Support long distance or endurance activities.
Fast twitch muscle fibers
Support quick exertions of force, power, or speed.
