Biology - Respiration Flashcards
Cellular respiration
An exothermic reaction which is continuousaly occurring in living cells
What does the energy transferred in respiration supply?
The energy transferred supplies all the energy needed for living processes
Aerobic respiration equation
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy release)
Glucose chemical symbol
C6H12O6
Oxygen chemical symbol
O2
Carbon dioxide chemical symbol
CO2
Water chemical symbol
H2O
Which respiration process has oxygen?
Aerobic respiration
Which respiration process doesn’t have oxygen?
Anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration equation in muscles
Glucose —> Lactic acid
How does the oxidation of glucose affect respiration?
As the oxidation of glucose is incomplete in anaerobic respiration, much less energy is tranferred than in aerobic respiration
Effects of excercise
The heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume increase during exercise to supply the muscles with more oxygenated blood. This enables increased cellular respiration so more energy is transferred to meet the demands of the muscle cells.
