Biology - Organisation, Cells and Microscopy Flashcards
Cells
Cells are the building blocks of all living organisms
Tissue
A tissue is a group of cells with a similar function and structure
What type of cells are eukaryotic?
Plant and animal cells
What do eukaryotic cells have?
They have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material (DNA) enclosed in a nucleus
What does a nucleus do?
Controls the activities of the cell
What happens in the cytoplasm?
Most of the chemical reactions take place
What does a cell membrane do and contain?
It controls the passage of substances into and out of the cell. It also contain receptor molecules
What happens in the mitochondria?
Aerobic respiration takes place
What happens in the ribosomes?
Protein synthesis
What do chloroplasts do?
Absorb light (using chlorophyll) to make food by photosynthesis
What is a permanent vacuole filled with?
Cell sap
What is a cell wall made out of?
Cellulose
What does the cell wall do?
Strengthens the cell
Which cells have a cell wall?
Plant and Algal cells
What are three specialised cells found in animals?
Sperm cells
Nerve cells
Muscle cells
