Biology Questions 1-10 Flashcards
What is an autotroph? (+Example)
an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Example: a plant
What is a Heterotroph? (+Example)
An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
Example: An animal - black bear
Define Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.
What do ADP + ATP stand for?
ADP = Adenosine Di Phosphate
ATP =Adenosine Tri Phosphate
What is the Difference between ADP + ATP?
- You get ADP by removing the 3rd Phosphate from ATP
- ADP looks almost identical to ATP, but it has 2 phosphate groups, instead of 3
What is the fx of ATP in cells?
It stores and releases energy
List 5 Activities that require ATP
- cell division.
- synthesis of proteins from amino acids.
- active transport.
- muscle cell contraction (in animal bodies)
- transmission of nerve impulses (in animal bodies)
What are the 3 parts of ATP?
Adenine, Ribose, and Phosphate groups
Write the equation for Photosynthesis?
6C02 + 6H20 + sunlight > C6H1206 + 602
What are the reactants for Photosynthesis?
Water, light, carbon dioxide
