Biology & Psychology Flashcards
List 3 brain imaging techniques
MRIs, CAT scan and functional MRIs
Name the 3 major subdivisions of the brain
Forebrain, midbrain and hind brain
Where is the forebrain and what does it do?
The forebrain is the front part of our brain controlling our temperature, eating and sleeping habits and the display of our emotions
What is the midbrain?
The midbrain connects the cerebrum with the pons. Associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep, alertness and temperature regulation.
What is the hind brain?
The hindbrain is the brainstem of the brain made up of the medulla, pons and cerebellum. Really important for heart rate, respiratory, hormones and survival functions.
What is the brainstem?
Located in the hindbrain
Brainstem: the medulla, pons and cerebellum (little brain in Latin)
What is the function of the hindbrain/brainstem?
Breathing, consciousness, blood pressure, heart rate, sleep. Helps regulate bodily functions. Important to survival.
What is the forebrain made of?
Corpus callosum, cerebrum cortex, limbus system, hypocthalamus
What is the limbic system?
Amygdala, hippocampus (mental map of environments)
What are the 4 lobes in the brain?
Frontal lobe, parietal, temporal and occipital
