biology - proteins Flashcards
1
Q
proteins
A
- they consist of one or more polypeptides arranged as complex macromolecules
- they have specific biological functions
- all proteinss contain the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
2
Q
what is the primary structure of protein structure?
A
the sequence of amino acids in a long chain, joined together by a peptide bond
3
Q
what is the secondary structure of protein structure?
A
when that long chain of amino acids fold into two different patterns e.g, alpha helix or the beta-pleated sheet
4
Q
what is the tertiary structure of protein structure?
A
- the coiling or folding of sections of protein into their seconday structure, which brings about R-groups that start to bond with eachother in the amino acid sequence
-e.g R-group interaction = hydrophilic and hydrophbic interactions = weak interactions between polar and non-polar R-groups
5
Q
what is the quatenary structure of protein structure
A
the association of several protein chains or subunits into a closely packed arrangement
6
Q
keep going queen!
A
7
Q
amino acids
A
- 20 different amino acids are commonly found in cells
