biology - plants and their environment Flashcards
what are factors that affect enzyme activity?
- temperature
- pH
- substrate and enzyme concentration
what are the envirmonmental importances of plants?
- they are habitals
- they produce oxygem
- they help regulate the climate
- they give us resources (e.g fruit and veg, gum, rubber wood and paper)
how do plants produce and grow?
- pollen is transferred by insects, birds or the wind
- the pollen tube opens, where the pollen moves down and fertilises the egg, turning it into a seed
- the plant ovary swells to support the seed
what factors affect the growth of plants?
- soil, pH and aeration
- temperature
- light intensity
- human effects (trampling, pollution, deforestation)
- mineral ions
- competition
limiting factor?
a factor that limits the rate of a reaction
biodiversity
the variety of life in a particular habitat
habitat
a place with suitable conditions for a variety of different plants and animals to live in
photosynthesis
the process by which plants make food using carbon dioxde, water and light energy
aeration
the process which air is circulated/mixed/dissolved through a liquid or substance
transpiration
the evaporation of water from the surface of the levels of plants
chlorophyll
the natural cimpound that gives plant their green colour
