Biology Papers 1 and 2 (IACT From Textbook) Flashcards
What is found in both animal and plant cells
Cell membrane, nucleus and ribosomes
What are only found in plant cells
Cell wall, chloroplast, vacuole
Explain why muscle cells contain many mitochondria
For energy and movement and contraction during exercise. This energy is supplied through respiration in the mitochondria.
Explain why all plant cells contain mitochondria but only some contain chloroplasts
Mitochondria release energy and all cells need energy, but only leaf and stem cells are exposed to light and so have chloroplasts for photosynthesis
Describe the difference between the functions of a cell wall and a cell membrane
The cell membrane controls the passage of substances into and out of the cell. However, the cell wall strengthens the cell and contains cellulose to do this. It also helps keep its shape and structure.
The main function of fat cells is to store fat, suggest an explanation for why pancreatic exocrine cells contain many more ribosomes than fat cells.
Enzymes are proteins, and proteins are made in ribosomes. Fat cells don’t produce as many proteins as pancreatic exocrine cells
