Biology M5 Exams Flashcards
What is the independent variable on the Microscopy practical
The concentration
What is the dependant variable of the Microscopy practical
The change in mass
What is the control variable of the Microscopy experiment
- Temperature
- Volume of liquid
- Time
- Surface are of Potato
Explain the Step by Step method of the Osmosis and Potato Practical
- Cut 6 2x2x2 cubes of potato
- In 6 different test tubes, place a sugar+water solution which all have different concentration
- Place one cube in each test tube and time for 5 mins
- After 5 mins, take each potato cube out and remeasure it
- The largest potato will be the cube which was placed in the lowest concentration on solution
Describe the Microscopy experiment
- Make your slide, make sure there are as little air bubbles inside and you do not touch the bottom or top of the slide
- Place the slide on the stage, and secure slide with stage clips
- Turn on the light
- Look though the eye piece and use the coarse adjustment and focus adjustment know to better your view of the slide
- Record any findings and dispose of the slide correctly
Explain the Culturing Microorganism in a Lab experiment
- Cut even cubes of agar jelly
- Place the agar jelly in a Petri dish
- Add the microorganism onto the agar jelly
- Place the lid of the Petri dish on top
- Tape the lid on and flip upside down
- Keep at a 25 degree temperate for safe results
What is the function and adaptation of sperm
Function - to get the male DNA to the female DNA
Adaptation - streamlined - lots of mitochondria to produce energy - long tail
What is the function and adaptation of a nerve
Function - to send electrical impulses around the body
Adaptation - to cover more distance - created a branched connections to form a connection with other nerves
What is a specialised cell and give 5 examples
A specialised cell is a cell that has changed to perform a specific role
- Nerve cell
- Sperm cell
- Muscle
- Root hair cell
5.
What is the function and adaptation of a root hair cell
Function - to absorb water from soil
Adaptation - large surface area
What are the equations for real size, magnification and image size
Real size = image size/magnification
Image size = magnification x real size
Magnification = image size/ real size
Rate of reaction equation
Rate of reaction - amount of reaction used/time
Rate of reaction - amount of product formed/time
What is the difference between Eukaryotic and and Prokaryotic cells
Eukaryotic cells have membrane-bound organelles e.g. mitochondria or nucleus
Give an example of a eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell
Eukaryotic - plant or animal cell
Prokaryotic - bacterium cell
