BIOLOGY | Lesson 4 | Plants Flashcards
What is the function of dermal tissue in the root system?
Protects the roots and assists with water/mineral absorption
What is the function of dermal tissue in the shoot system?
Protects the shoot and helps prevent water loss
What is the function of ground tissue in the root system?
Stores nutrients and water
What is the function of ground tissue in the shoot system?
Supports the plant and performs photosynthesis in leaves
What is the function of vascular tissue in the root system?
Transports water and nutrients from the soil to the rest of the plant.
What is the function of vascular tissue in the shoot system?
Distributes minerals/water/sugar throughout the plant
What are root hairs and what are their function?
Extensions of roots that increase surface area for water and nutrient absorption.
What is a cuticle and what does it do?
A waxy layer on the surface of leaves and stems that reduces water loss.
What are guard cells? (in a plant)
specialized cells surrounding stomata that regulate their opening and closing to control gas exchange.
What are stomata, and what is their function?
Small openings on leaf surfaces that allow for gas exchange
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Cells in a plant that perform photosynthesis
What is the palisade mesophyll?
A layer of tightly packed cells in leaves (that perform photosynthesis)
What is the spongy mesophyll
A layer of loosely packed cells that facilitate gas exchange
What is the function of xylem tissue?
Carry water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant
What is the function of phloem tissue?
Carry sugars and nutrients from the leaves to the rest of the plant
