BIOLOGY | Lesson 2 | The Cell Flashcards
What is a cell?
A micro-organism that makes up all living things
What is the connection/relationship to cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems?
- Cells are the smallest
- Lots of cells = tissues
- Lots of tissues + function = organ
- Lots of organs = organ systems
What is the cell membrane?
An organelle that acts protective barrier that allows the passage of food and waste in/out of the cell
What is the cell wall?
An organelle that holds the cell together while keeping debris out (only found in plant cells)
What is the cytoplasm?
The fluid inside a cell that holds nutrients, other organelles can move through it
What is the nucleus (of a cell)?
The “brain” of a cell vital for function
What is the nucleolus?
An organelle in which ribosomes are created
What is the chloroplast?
An organelle in which photosynthesis occurs (only found in plant cells)
What is the vacuole?
An organelle that stores things like fats, nutrients, water, etc.
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
“Tubes” inside a cell that carry protein through the cell
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
“Tubes” inside a cell that carry fats and oils through the cell
What are ribosomes?
Areas in a cell where amino acids are assembled into proteins
What is the lysosome?
An organelle that “digests” substances and kills harmful bacteria
What is the golgi body?
An organelle that receives waste and packages them to be removed from the cell
What is the mitochondria?
An organelle that converts chemical energy into usable energy (the powerhouse of the cell)
