Biology Lab 2 Flashcards
Modules 1-4 9
Are a group of similar cells, in
proximity, organized
to perform one or more
specific functions.
Tissues
This type of tissue is
composed of tightly packed
cells with very little
intercellular substance.
Epithelial Tissue
Group of tissues in the
body that :
a) Maintain the form of the
Body and its organs.
b) Provide cohesion and
Internal support.
Connective Tissue
- Attached to the bone to provide
body movements and locomotion. - Long, cylindrical muscle fibers,
each containing 2 or more nuclei
located near the plasma membrane. - Alternating light and dark bands or
striations.
Muscle Tissue
The main function is
conductivity to coordinate
and control many body
activities.
Main components: nerve
cells or neurons, and the
supporting cells called
neuroglia.
Nervous Tissue
[Epithelial Tissue]
One Layer
Simple
[Epithelial Tissue]
More than one layer of cells
Stratified
[Epithelial Tissue]
Closely packed cells that appear to
be arranged in layers
because they’re different sizes.
Pseudostratified
- Presence of a basement
membrane and apical
surface. - Presence of specializations
on its apical surface, such as
cilia and microvilli. - Extremely coherent
intercellular adhesions.
Epithelial Tissue
[Epithelial Tissue]
The cells are fragile
and rectangular in
profile and are
arranged closely
together to form a
sheet.
Simple squamous
[Epithelial Tissue]
- These cells appear as
box-like or cube-like
cells with more or less
equal height and width. - Lining each circular
thyroid follicle or kidney
tubules.
Simple cuboidal
[Epithelial Tissue]
“pitcher-like” mucus glands
called?
Goblet cells.
[Epithelial Tissue]
Two or more layers of
epithelial cells,
specifically named
based on the shape
of the cells at the
surface.
Stratified squamous
It is the process by which a single cell divides into two or more daughter cells, each with the potential to grow, develop, and carry out specific functions.
A fundamental process in biology is essential for living organisms’ growth, repair, and reproduction.
