Down’s Syndrome
A form of severe intellectual disability that results from an extra 21st chromosome.
Phenylketonuria (PKU)
Genetic defect in which the child lacks the enzyme needed to digest phenylalanine; can be controlled with a strict diet.
Klinefelter’s Syndrome
Found in males with an extra X chromosome.
Turner’s Syndrome
Found in females with only one X chromosome.
Zygote
Cell formed when sperm cell fertilizes the egg
Germinal Period
The fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube and is implanted into uterine wall.
Embryonic Period
Eight weeks after germinal period; embryo increases in size by 2 million percent.
Fetal Period
Begins in the 3rd month, measurable electric activity in fetus’ brain.
Rooting (neonatal reflex)
Infants automatically turning their heads in the direction of stimuli.
Moro (neonatal reflex)
Infants reacting to abrupt movements; flinging out arms, extending fingers, hugging themselves.
Babinski (neonatal reflex)
Infants’ toes automatically spreading when the soles of their feet are stimulated.
Grasping (neonatal reflex)
Infants automatically close their fingers around objects in their hand.
