Biology Endocrine System Topic- Key Knowledge Flashcards
Differences between Nervous and Endocrine system?
- Short lived vs long lasting effects
-Fast travel and rapid effect vs slow travel and take longer to act - Localised effect vs widespread effect
- nerve impulses transmitted through neurones vs hormones diffused through bloodstream
What is a positive geotropism?
Growth towards gravity
What is a positive phototropism?
Growth towards light
What does insulin do?
Produced in pancreas, lowers concentration of sugar in the blood by converting glucose into glycogen stored in the liver
What does ADH do?
Produced in the pituitary gland, osmoregulation by increasing permeability of collecting duct in the nephron of a kidney
What does adrenaline do?
Produced in the adrenal glands, prepares body for physical action, increases breathing rate, heart rate, and mental awareness, glycogen in liver is broken down into glucose
How do auxins work?
They diffuse from the tip of a stem and accumulates on the dark side of a plant, stimulate growth so shoot bends towards the light.
