Biology Chapter 9 Flashcards
Nastic Response
Plants that respond to touch.
Ex: Venus Flytrap
Phototropism
The growth of a plant towards the light. Auxin diffuses to the cells on the shaded side, causing cells there to elongate, causing the stem to bend the plant toward the light.
Gravitropism
The growth of a plant in response to gravity.
Positive gravitropism - Roots grow down toward the pull of gravity.
Negative gravitropism - Stems grow away from the pull of gravity.
Cohesive Forces
Attractive forces between water molecules.
Adhesive Forces
Attractive forces between water molecules and molecules of a surface.
Lenticels
Lens-shaped openings that perforate the park of plants such as trees and shrubs.
Multicellular organisms can have:
- A larger size
- A variety of specialized cells
- An ability to survive in a wider range of environments
