Biology Chapter 8 Photosynthesis Test Flashcards
Organisms that obtain food by consuming other living things
Heterotrophs
Organisms that make their own food
Autotrophs
The process by which autotrophs use the energy of sunlight to produce high-energy carbohydrates that can be used as food
Photosynthesis
The light absorbing molecules in a plant
Pigments
The plant’s principle pigment
Chlorophyll
These are found in a chloroplast, they are saclike photosynthetic membranes, their stacks are called grana
Thylakoids
The fluid portion of the chloroplast which is outside of the thylakoid
Stroma
An electron carrier that accepts a pair of high energy electrons and transfers them and their energy to another molecule
NADP+
These kinds of reactions require light, they produce NADPH and ATP, takes place in the thylakoid membrane
Light dependent reactions
These reactions do not require light, they produce sugars by the combination of carbon dioxide and ATP/NADPH
Light independent reactions
These are found in the thylakoid membrane, they are clusters of chlorophyll and proteins
Photosystems
This transports high energy electrons during ATP- generating reactions
Electron transport chain
This protein allows H+ ions to be shuttled out of the thylakoid lumen, it is powered by the gradient, it creates ATP
ATP synthase
Nickname for light independent reactions
The Calvin Cycle
One of the most important compounds that cells use to store and release energy
ATP
