Biology
Science of life
Organism
Something alive that grows, moves, reproduces, and has energy
Organization
Arranged in an orderly way
Growth
Increase in size, normally includes forming new cells
Development
Process of natural changes that take place during an organism’s life
Reproduction
Production of offspring
Species
Group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
Stimulus
Anything that causes an organism to react
Response
Reaction to a stimulus
Homeostasis
Regulation of an organism’s internal conditions, needed to remain alive
Adaptation
A change over time to help an organism survive in its environment
Science
Knowledge based on the study of nature
Theory
A well-supported explanation of a natural phenomenon
Peer Review
Process by which other scientists in the same field examine the procedures and results of one scientist’s experiment
Metric System
Lengths and weights with divisions that are powers of ten
SI

Forensics
Application of science to matters of legal interest
Ethics
A set of moral principles or values
Observation
Direct method of gathering information (viewing, photographing, note-taking)
Inference
A logical conclusion drawn by combining what you know with what you have learned
Scientific Method
Methods to gather information and answer questions
Hypothesis
Testable explanation of a situation
Serendipity
The occurrence of accidental or unexpected but fortunate results
Experiment
Investigation of a phenomenon in a controlled environment to test a hypothesis
Control Group
A group left unchanged or unaffected. Used for comparison in an experiment
Experimental Group
The group in an experiment that is being changed to test the hypothesis
Independent Variable
The one factor changed in the experiment
Dependent Variable
The factor that is not purposefully changed, but changes based upon the independent variable
Constant
The factor in the experiment that remains the same no matter how the dependent and independent change
Data
Information gained from observation
Safety Symbol
A symbol or logo designed to warn you about a certain danger
