Biology(Carbohydrates) Flashcards
What elements make up carbohydrates and in what ratio?
Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), and Oxygen (O) in a 1:2:1 ratio.
What are the three types of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides, Disaccharides, and Polysaccharides.
What are some examples of monosaccharides?
Glucose, Fructose, Galactose.
What are the sources of monosaccharides?
Fruits and vegetables.
What are the functions of monosaccharides?
Provide energy
Excess glucose is converted into glycogen and fats for storage.
What are some examples of disaccharides?
Sucrose, Maltose, Lactose.
What are the sources of disaccharides?
Sugar cane, beet root, milk.
What is a function of disaccharides?
Involved in synthesis of DNA
What are some examples of polysaccharides?
Starch, Cellulose, Glycogen.
What are the sources of polysaccharides?
Rice, cereal, bread.
How is maltose formed?
Glucose + Glucose → Maltose + Water.
How is sucrose formed?
Glucose + Fructose → Sucrose + Water.
How is lactose formed?
Glucose + Galactose → Lactose + Water.
