Biology and Behavior Flashcards
What are the three types of neurons in the nervous system?
Motor (efferent), interneurons, and sensory (afferent)
Parasympathetic?
Rest and digest
Sympathetic?
Fight or flight
Hindbrain
Contains cerebellum, medulla oblongata, and reticular formation
Midbrain
Contains inferior and superior colliculi
Forebrain
Contains thalamus, hypothalamus, basal ganglia, limbic system, and cerebral cortex
Thalamus function
relay station for sensory information
Hypothalamus function
Maintains homeostasis and integrates with the endocrine system through the hypophyseal portal system that connects it to the anterior pituitary
Basal ganglia function
Smoothens movements and helps maintain postural stability
Limbic system function
Controls emotion and memory. Includes septal nuclei, amygdala, hippocampus, and fornix
Septal nuclei
Pleasure-Seeking
Amygdala
Fear and aggression
Hippocampus
Memory
Fornix
Communication with limbic system
Four lobes of cerebral cortex?
Frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal
