Biology 8 (Plant Organ Systems) Flashcards
What are the two systems of organs in a plant
Root system
Shoot system
What is te root system
takes in water and minerals from soil to transport into the shoot system
What is the shoot system
supports the system, performs photosynthesis, transports sap
What are the organs included in the shoot organs system
flower, leaves, fruit, stem
What are the bundles that connect plant systems and transport hormones
vascular bundles
What do vascular bundles contain
xylem and phloem
What does xylem do
Moves things from the roots to other plants
dies at maturity so that they do not need energy to function
what does phloem do
moves sugars produces by photosynthesis to other parts of the plant
What do xylem and phloem do together
Get nutrients and water throughout the entire plant
Why can a plant not live without water
the nutrients that the plants need are dissolved in water and taken up through roots
(photosynthesis cannot occur)
why is to much water a problem
the water fills the spaces in the soil, leaving no room for oxygen
(cellular resp. cannot occur)
how are nutrients and water transferred into the cell
osmosis
what do root hairs do
expand the surface area of the root
what happens whe water flows into the xylem vessel
the water is forced upward to the leaves
what are the parts of water that prevent sap from flowing into the roots
- cohesion
- adhesion
what is cohesion
holds water molecules together
what is adhesion
makes water stick to surfaces
what is transpiration
the plant making room for more water by getting rid of water vapour
What are stomata
Tiny openings that allowthe exchange of gases
When there is too much water, what will happen
the stomata open, vapor leaves, other gases (CO2) enter
What dicatates the speed at which gases enter the stomata
the amount of water vapour in the leaves
