Biology 4 (The Human Body) Flashcards
What are the types of tissues
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
What does epithelial tissue do
Made up of tightly packed cells
Forms barriers (eg. skin)
What does connective tissue do
Join other tissues together (eg. tendons, ligaments, blood, cartilage, bones)
What does muscle tissue do
Skeletal muscle: Voluntary movement
Smooth muscle: Involuntary movement
(Line blood vessels, stomach, etc.)
Cardiac muscle: Involuntary movement
(In heart)
What does nervous tissue do
Made up of nerve cells
Sends messages
Communication link of the body
What are the muscles that change the shape of the pupil
Ciliary and Orbital
What is the name of the part of the eye that detects light
Retina
How does the retina inform the brain about the light that it detects
Optic nerve
What is the name of the thing that protects the eye
Cornea
What is the eye made of
A lot of different specialised cells
What are the four components of blood
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
Plasma
What is blood
A type of connective tissue
What are the three types of vessels
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
What is the lymphatic system
Filtering system
Delivers nutrients
Located between cells
Lymph nodes are all over the place
Where does lymph come from
It starts as plasma
Some plasma leaves blood stream and
flows into surrounding tissues
Interstitial fluid delivers nutrients to cells
and takes up cell waste
90% of tissue fluid flows back through
circulatory system, 10% is left
behind and is now lymph
In which direction can lymph flow
Up (back into the blood stream after its life cycle)
What is interstitial fluid
Inter (between) cells (stitial) **
What are the elements of the respiratory system
Trachea
Bronchi
Alveoli
What is the trachea
The start of the tubes that take in air
What are the bronchi
The trachea splitting into smaller tubes
What are the alveoli
Tiny air sacs surrounded by blood vessils
