Biology 6.1 Flashcards
Chemistry - information about cells
Atoms
The building blocks of matter
Nucleus
The center of the atom
Proton
- Positively charged particles (p subscript +)
- Located: INSIDE the nucleus
Neutron
- Particles that have no charge (n subscript 0)
- Located: INSIDE the nucleus
Electron
- Negatively charged particles (e subscript -)
- Located: OUTSIDE the nucleus
Element
A pure substance that can’t be broken down into other substances by physical or chemical means
Isotope (Elem and N)
Atoms of the same element that have different #s of neutrons
Compound (Elem)
A pure substance formed when 2 or different elements combine
Radioactive isotopes
When isotope is radioactive, the nucleus starts to decay/break apart
Chemical bonds
The force that holds substances together
Ionic bonds
An electrical attraction between two oppositely charged atoms/groups of atoms (called ions)
Covalent bonds (E)
The bond that forms when electrons are shared
Molecule(Co)
A compound in which the atoms are held together by covalent bonds
Ions (2)
An atom that: (2)
1. has lost or gained 1+ electrons
2. carries an electric charge
Atomic number
number of protons
