Biology 2.1 Flashcards
Ecology
The study of organisms as they relate to other living organisms + interaction with their environment
Biosphere
The portion of Earth that supports life
Biotic factors
Living factors in an organism’s environment
ex: fish, frogs, birds
Abiotic factors
Nonliving factors in an organism’s environment
Ex: temp, air, sunlight
Population (3)
A group of organisms that:
a) are the same species that interbreed
b) live in the same place
c) live at the same time
Biological community
All popul. of species that live in the same place at the same time to make a biological community
Ex: fish, coral marine plants)
Ecosystem
A biological community that affects it makes up an organism
Biome
A group of ecosystems that share the same climate + have similar types of communities
Ex: coral reefs on coast of FL Keys
Habitat
An area where an organism lives
Niche
The role/position that an organism has in its environment
Predation
The act of a predator pursuing + consuming prey for food –> energy
Symbiosis
Close relationship that exists when 2+ species live together
Mutualism
Relationship between 2+ organisms that live closely together + benefit from each other.
Commensalism
A relationship = one organism benefits and the other organism is neither helped or harmed
Parasitism
A relationship = one organism benefits at the expense of another organism
