Biology #4 Flashcards
What is the circulatory system?
The system that moves blood throughout the body
What body parts does the circulatory system include?
the heart, blood and blood vessels
What does the blood do?
- transports CO2 waste away from your cells
- transports nutrients, O2 and water to your cells
How much blood is in your body?
about 4-5 L
What is the solid part of blood?
red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
What is the liquid part of blood?
water, proteins and minerals, dissolved salts
What is the function of red blood cells?
Carries O2 and CO2 through out the body
What is the function of the white blood cells?
fight infections
What is the function of the platelets?
Clots blood and stops blood from running when injured
What is sickle cell anemia?
A disease where the RBCs are shaped like Cs and can’t carry O2 or CO2 properly, and doesn’t have regular haemoglobin levels and can cause blockage in blood vessels.
What is leukaemia?
A disease where the WBCs fight each other.
where do WBCs come from?
bone marrow
What is hemophilia?
A genetic disease where the blood doesn’t clot properly because patients have lower clotting factor level of blood plasma
