Biology 2 Flashcards
What is the role of phloem
Phloem is a plant tissue thattransports food and other substances throughout the plant.
What is the role of xylem
The role of xylem is to transport water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the leaves
What is the name of the process pathway taken by water to the xylem
Osmosis causes water to pass into the root hair cells, through the root cortex and into the xylem vessels.
What is transpiration
Transpiration is the loss of water by evaporation from the leaves of plants.
Describe how water is lost from a plant by transpiration.
Water evaporates from the surface of mesophyll cells in the leaf into the air spaces in the leaf.
Water vapour diffuses out of the leaf through the stomata
What is the function of palisade mesophyll
Main site of photosynthesis due to high chloroplast content
What is the function for spongy mesophyll
Gas exchange
Function of air spaces
Facilitate gas movement for photosynthesis and respiration
Function of stomata and guard cells
Regulate gas exchange and water loss through transpiration
What does the left side of the heart do
The left side of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs. It is then pumped all over the body at high pressure as it contains oxygen required for respiration.
What does the right side of the heart do.
The right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Describe the function of the circulatory system.
The circulatory system transports blood, oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to the body’s cells and removes waste products like carbon dioxide
Describe the function of the valves of the circulatory system?
To prevent backflow and to ensure one way flow of blood
Describe the function of the heart
To pump the blood around the body
