Biology 1 Chapter 1 (Lecture) Flashcards
Emergent
Properties that are not present in the preceding level of biological organization, but are now present.
Biology
Scientific study of life.
Reductionism
Reducing complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study
Levels of Biological Organization (smallest to largest)
1) Atoms
2) Molecules
3) Organelles
4) Cells
5) Tissues
6) Organs
7) Organ Systems
8) Organisms
9) Population
10) Community
11) Ecosystem
12) Biosphere
Atoms
Smallest chemical units
Molecule
Chemical structure consisting of 2 or more atoms
Organelles
Various functional components that make up cells. These are made up of molecules. (EX: Chloroplasts)
Cells
Fundamental unit of structure and function. It might take more than 700 cells to reach across a penny.
Tissues
Cells organized into groups because they have similar functions.
Organs
Tissues grouped together and organized.
Organ Systems
Organized organs
Organisms
Individual living things (includes plants, animals, bacteria, etc.)
Population
Consists of all the individuals of a species living within a certain area.
Community
Combination of different populations that are in a particular area.
Ecosystem
Combination of the nonliving things in an area with the communities
