Biological Motion Flashcards
biological motion
special case of motion perception
movement of a person or living organism
makes sense that we want a lot of info from this: friend or foe?
object motion is processed in what pathway?
dorsal: where/how pathway
complex object perception involve what cortical areas?
MT and MST
algorithmic level
apply Gestalt principles (common fate and familiarity) to see or recognize specific movement patterns in the moving lights during exposure to point-light walker stimulus
implementational level: what’s happening in the brain to cause this?
neurological studies show bio motion is processed by
SUPERIOR TEMPORAL SULCUS (dorsal pathway)
and
FUSIFORM FACE AREA
point-light walker stimulus
bio motion made by placing lights in specific places on a person
Extrastriate body area (EBA)
not involved in perceiving moving bodies, only necessary for perceiving static bodies
another study implicating superior temporal sulcus (STS) in biological motion
used a TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to create temporary interference to STS
results: this caused a decrease in the subject’s ability to detect bio motion = suggests that STS is necessary in processing bio motion info
when they did TMS to MT it had no affect
