11
Q

What is the structure of fatty acids and how does it relate to its properties

A

-high ratio of carbon- hydrogen bonds - so excellent source of energy
-low mass to energy ratio - good storage molecule
-large and non polar and insoluble in water so don’t affect water potential(osmotic)
-high ratio of hydrogen to oxygen atoms allow to release water when oxidised- advantageous in hot/dry conditions - metabolise fat

A

Glycolipids

18
Q

What is the test for a lipid

A

2cm3 sample to 2 cm3 ethanol
Shake

A white/milky emulsion indicates a lipid

19
Q

What are some of the functions of lipids

A

-high energy store
-waterproof coverings
-insulating layer (layer of fat as poor of heat)
-Shock-absorbing layers
-Major components of cell membranes
-Used in steroids and scents
