Biological Molecules Flashcards
3 types of macromolecules
polysaccharides - made of monosaccarides
Proteins (polypeptides) - made of amino acids
Nucleic acids (polynucleotides) - made of nucleotides
Monomer
A simple molecule used as a building block for the synthesis for the synthesis of a polymer
Polymer
A giant molecule made from many similar, repeating subunits joined together in a chain
Role of covalent bonds
Joining smaller molecules together to form polymers
Macromolecules
A large biological molecule
Monosaccharide (+general formula)
A molecule consisting of 2 single sugar units with a general formula of (CH2O)n
Disaccharide
A sugar molecule consisting of 2 monosaccharides joined together by a glycosidic bond
Polysaccaride
A polymer whose subunits are monosaccharides joined together by glycosidic bonds
What elements do carbohydrates contain?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
Carbohydrate general formula
Cx(H2O)n
Minimum number of carbon atoms in an amino acid
2
