Biological molecules Flashcards
If something isn’t working as it should in the body we say it is?
Diseased
What are the 4 molecules that make up living things?
Carbohydrates, lipids (oils and fats), proteins, nucleic acids.
What is a organic molecule?
Biological molecules are that contain the element carbon are said to be organic compounds.
What is a inorganic molecule?
Compounds that do not contain carbon are said to be inorganic molecules.
What is Carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are a family of organic molecules made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
Carbohydrates are important they provide the body with glucose which is converted to energy to support the body.
The most common sources of carbohydrates are grains, sugars etc.
What is lipids?
Lipids are a group of organic compounds which feel oily, greasy, or waxy. They are basically fats (solid) and oils (liquid).
Lipids have many roles such as;
fuel for the body, hormones and make up membranes.
They give twice as much energy as carbohydrates.
What are proteins?
Proteins are long chained molecules.
Each cell contains several hundred to several thousand proteins.
Proteins play a key role in the body. They are involved in:
Enzyme reactions, structure, storage, transport, cell signaling and defense.
Where does the oxygen that enters our body for cellular respiration enter?
It enters the the lungs when we inhale and is carried to the cells in the blood.
where does carbon dioxide leave the body?
Carbon dioxide is transported from the blood to the lungs then it exits from the lungs when we exhale.
