Biological Membranes Flashcards
What are biological membranes?
Biological membranes are the inside and outside of a cell organelle
What are biological membranes?
Biological membranes are the inside and outside of a cell/organelle
State the functions of biological membranes
√Barrier to toxic molecules √Help accumulate nutrients √Carry out energy transduction √Facilitate cell motion (movement) √Assist in reproduction √Mediate cell- cell interactions
Give the constituents of cell membranes
Lipids
Proteins
Carbohydrates
Lipids
*Constitutes about 50% mass of most animal cell membranes
They are generally insoluble in water
Part of the molecule is hydrophobic and hydrophilic
Explain Monolayers Micelles Bilayers Liposomes
MONOLAYERS
Monolayers: This is the addition of small amount of fatty acids to aqueous solutions
Micelles
Further addition of fatty acids to aqueous solutions will form micelles
Bi- layers
They consist of back to back arrangement of monolayers
Liposomes
They consist of spares of lipid bilayers that enclose part of the aqueous medium
