Biological Explanation/approach Flashcards
What is the COMT gene?
Production of hormone, regulates dopamine production
What did turkel et al (2003) find? (OCD)
OCD linked to low activity of COMT gene and high dopamine levels
What is the SERT gene?
Linked to serotonin, low levels lead to OCD
What did Ozaki et al (2003) find? (OCD)
Found mutation of SERT gene in family where 6/7 members had OCD
What is the diathesis stress model (OCD)?
- OCD polygenic (linked to more than 1 gene)
- genetic vulnerability passed through generations but environmental stressor triggers disorder
- also linked to depression and PTSD
What are the assumptions of the biological approach?
- behaviour caused by pheno/geno type
- behaviour can be inherited
- brain structure can explain behaviour
What does concordance rates/twin studies show about the biological approach?
Not 100% do there are other factors
Draw the nervous system
Nervous system
Peripheral. Central Spine. Back Somantic Autonomic. Parasympathetic Sympathetic
